The American Transport Authorities don't need any encouragement to kick hard an importer whose products out-perform those of their home vehicle producers. VOSA had to be kicked into asking (I suspect politely) VAG to recall the notorious Siemens PD injectors. It will be interesting to see if the return to a more sensible injector technology will be applied to European vehicles. VW have a clear lead in small diesel technology over any of the American makers, so there is a huge amount of business at stake. More recently, in a bid by the Americans to protect their home industry, Toyota were taken to the cleaners, spun thoroughly and hung out to dry. Remember that years ago, Audi were almost banished from the US for some design fault. On a general point, I wonder if VAG took a hard look at piezo injector reliability in Europe and decided not to risk it for a new (USA screwdrivered) model in the States. New hoses are expensive - but improvisation pays. Look here carefully and fit new "O" rings - they're not dear and are available over the counter from a VW dealer. The wire "horseshoe" clips on the rubber boost pipe couplings fret the aluminium ears on the hose ends, causing the joint to spring apart under conditions of high boost. If you have a hissing noise you have a boost leak which will reduce engine output and may illuminate the MIL. A paper label on the ECU identifies its maker. A confirmation can be made if you lift the lid of the ECU container - Bosch ECU for Bosch injectors, Siemens for the others. Anyone contemplating the purchase of a diesel VAG vehicle might be well advised to consider the two designs very carefully and possibly wait for the solenoid/AdBlue update.ġ52.66.93.29/audi/download/vw/passat/2012%20passat.fīen, if your vehicle is MY '05 (10th digit in VIN) it will have Bosch solenoid actuated injectors. It would seem to me that the present generation of piezo injected CR diesels from this supplier are a liability - and they know it. I see also that the ridiculously complex DPF system has been simplified by the adoption of AdBlue. I wonder if the cost of retrofitted replacements together with the risk of litigation (especially in the US where the attached document originates) has initiated this change of policy. VW Passat 2012 - VW ditch unreliable piezo injectors on '12 diesels - 659FBEĪfter all the hype from VW concerning the performance advantages of piezo injectors over solenoid actuated injectors, I find it slightly satisfying to see a design "U" turn and a reversion to the more reliable solenoid actuated devices.
